The Ringside Cafe is known as St Petersburg's "Home of the blues" but on May 19 it became the "home of Prog" as original Kansas violinist Robby Steinhardt, stopped by for a brief set.

Robby Steinhardt

Robby has spent 10 years in retirement, battling serious health issues but the word was out that tonight would mark his return to the stage. The evening began with a set by Stormbringer who once worked with Robby under the name of Steinhardt Moon. Stormbringer are excellent musicians but the set was mainly composed of covers of 80's era hits. The buzz grew as Stormbringer returned for their second set as the "guest headliner" joined the band on stage. Robby is not as agile as he was in his younger days but he has lost nothing from his mastery of the violin. The crowd cheered as the band kicked into an aggressive version of Song For America. Stormbringer provided a perfect backdrop for Robby's soaring violin magic.

Sparks Of The Tempest followed with strong solos from Robby and guitarist Rick Moon. Carry On My Wayward Son and The Point Of Know Return were rendered flawlessly for the enthusiastic crowd. The band never wavered, handling the tricky instrumental and vocal passages to perfection. Robby concluded his set with the rocker Back Seat Love Affair from his days with Steinhardt Moon. It was a departure from Kansas, being harder edged, and a fine change of pace.

Robby departed the stage leaving the crowd hungering for more. Hopefully, his health will allow him to perform more often because he definitely has much more music left in him.
